you’re wonderful stuff,

You’re covered with sauce

piled high in a mound,

Koromiko syndicate visited The Carter Observatory as part of their "That's Astronomical!" unit. We attended a workshop on how night and day and the seasons happen. We found out the the way the Earth is tilted is very important.

New Baby giraffe at Auckland zoo

New Baby Giraffe for Auckland Zoo

Auckland Zoo has welcomed a healthy baby giraffe, the 29th to be born at the zoo.
The 1.8m tall, 55kg male calf was born after a longer-than-usual three hours of labour at 6am Friday, the zoo's website said.
It is the third offspring of mother Rukiya, 9, and Zabulu, 11. Their first calf, born May 2006, died.
Auckland Zoo Pridelands team leader Nat Sullivan said the mother and calf would gradually be integrated into the giraffe paddock.
Zoo visitors should be able to see the calf in a few weeks before it is eventually relocated to another zoo as part of an Australasian breeding programme.
Auckland Zoo currently has three giraffes, and will soon have a fourth from Monarto Zoo in Adelaide.

What is going on? This week Jacob found a four leaf clover and we all thought this was very lucky and we all thought it would be very unlikely if we could find another. But we did.... lots of them. Does that make Room 18 especially lucky- absolutely!

Watch the seeds grow

In our class we grew cress seeds in cotton wool on our nature table.They grew really quickly but not as quickly as the ones in this clip. Some of us have been snacking on the cress that we grew. It was tasty and some of thought it was peppery.

This week we looked at an article in The Dominion Post about a new flavour of vegemite- one with cream cheese added. Our class had a "Vegemite Census" to see the most popular name for the new vegemite. Take our poll to vete for your favourite name.

Our cress initials are growing

We planted cress seeds in the shape of our initials and have been watering them everyday and watching them grow. They are now like little forests and some measure more than 12 cm.

We had our school cross country on Wednesday. It was a great day and we all ran really hard.

Planting our initials in seeds

In Room 18 we are looking at "Food from the Earth." We are looking at where our food comes from, how our food grows and how it is processed. Today, some of the class planted cress seeds in wet cotton wool. First we got a meat tray and placed a pad of cotton wool in it. Then we wet the cotton wool and sprinkled the mustard cress in the shape of our initials. We have put them on the nature table beside our bean seeds and are watching to see when they will sprout.

Elliott's oral presentation

On Friday, Elliott gave his oral presentation and demonstrated a sciece experiment. For the experiment he set up a table with:
- a tray
- some detergent
-some food colouring
- several tissue paper packets containing baking soda
- a see through container with white vinegar
- and a lid

Netball has started

On Saturday, netball began and we have quite a few children in Room 18 playing. It was agreat game and they won!

Toadstool discovery

Last week, Ahie Reading group went outside to look at the dead leaves under the trees. They were amazed to see a toadstool right outside the classroom door. We looked for others but it was the only one we could find. The toadstool is now in a plastic bag on our classroom nature table. We thought it was likely that it was poisonous so we haven't touched it.

There were lots of children riding to school on their bikes today and the Koromiko Syndicate celebrated with their own "Decorated Bike Helmet" parade. Well done to all of you who participated. Wow Sasha, what a great glittery, sparkly bike helmet.

Room 18 Kenakena School

Hello everyone and welcome to the Room 18 blog. This is our first blog for the year.

We are a class of Year 3 and 4 students from Kenakena School.

We've had a brilliant start to the new year with loads of fabulous things happening.

Here is a photo of the class in font of a helicopter that visited our school last week.

Yesterday on 19th March, 2008 it was the best day of my life. We went outside to discover a rescue helicopter. When we looked above room 8 and 9 we saw the super spinning rotor blades. Before it even landed we heard this gigantic noise.
It was the fiery noise of the engines. While it was still in flight we saw that the door was open. I was very frightened because I thought that the person inside was going to fall out. The helicopter was so enormous that it created a sandstorm when it landed. I felt excited and a bit angry because we were meant to go and see it at 9.30 am but then it was delayed until 10.00. Guess what happened next? It got delayed until 11.00 am. When we got to the back field we had to see inside the helicopter last because the juniors got too noisy and impatient.
